Preparation for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)

Comprehensive USMLE Review Program

American Health has developed a comprehensive USMLE Review Program designed to prepare medical graduates and students for success on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The program integrates foundational medical sciences with clinical application, helping participants develop the knowledge, critical thinking, and clinical reasoning skills required for licensure and practice in the United States.

USMLE Background

In the United States and its territories, medical licensure is granted by individual state medical boards. Each licensing authority establishes its own requirements and regulations for the practice of medicine and generally requires successful completion of the USMLE as part of the licensure process.

The USMLE serves as a standardized assessment system used by state medical boards to evaluate candidates seeking medical licensure. Examination results are reported directly to licensing authorities and are utilized in determining eligibility for medical practice.

The USMLE evaluates a physician’s ability to apply medical knowledge, concepts, and principles, as well as demonstrate the patient-centered skills necessary for safe and effective clinical care. The examination is designed to assess readiness for medical practice and supports the development of lifelong learning and professional competence.

The USMLE Examination Process

Step 1

Step 1 assesses the examinee’s understanding and application of the foundational sciences that underpin the practice of medicine. Emphasis is placed on the principles and mechanisms of health, disease, and therapeutic interventions.

The examination evaluates mastery of the scientific concepts essential for the safe and effective practice of medicine and provides the foundation for continued professional development throughout a physician’s career.

Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (Step 2 CK)

Step 2 CK assesses the examinee’s ability to apply medical knowledge, clinical science, and patient-care principles in supervised clinical settings.

The examination focuses on:

  • Clinical decision-making
  • Health promotion and disease prevention
  • Diagnosis and management of medical conditions
  • Patient-centered care
  • Evidence-based medicine

Step 2 CK evaluates the clinical knowledge and reasoning skills required for the safe and competent practice of medicine.

Step 3

Step 3 is the final examination in the USMLE sequence and assesses the knowledge and clinical judgment necessary for the independent practice of medicine.

The examination emphasizes:

  • Patient management
  • Clinical decision-making
  • Ambulatory and outpatient care
  • Application of biomedical and clinical science in real-world settings

Step 3 serves as the final assessment before physicians assume independent responsibility for delivering comprehensive medical care.
